Council houses in Havering are soon to enjoy the energy-saving benefits of new double glazing windows as the council has been awarded funding from the government's Decent Homes programme.Council houses in a London borough are to get double glazing windows, having secured £9 million of Decent Homes funding.Havering families will benefit from various home improvements, such as new bathrooms and new kitchens. The government put a hold on decent homes funding last year after deciding to divert the funds into building new properties instead.Havering Council threatened to challenge the decision in the courts but recently withdrew from the legal action.Insidehousing.co.uk reported a statement from the council as saying: "Havering decided to withdraw from the expensive legal action and focus on negotiations that would not cost council taxpayers any more money."The statement went on to say that, as a result of these negotiations, Havering has now been put back on the Decent Homes programme.Double glazing windows installed under the programme will not only make the homes feel warmer, but will cut the occupants' energy bills.According to the Energy Saving Trust, double glazing windows can reduce bills by around £135 a year.Posted by Lucy Pritchard
