The coalition statement outlined plans to help homeowners improve the energy efficiency of their properties through a loan scheme paid for by savings in fuel bills.

In addition to potentially funding things like the installation of cheap double glazing, the new government also intends to continue the roll-out of smart metering.

The Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition also intends to maintain the feed-in tariff for generation of green electricity through the likes of wind turbines and solar panels, launched by the Labour government in April.

In their manifesto, the Lib Dems proposed a £400 cashback initiative for cheap double glazing, efficient boilers and solar panels.

John Alker, head of advocacy at the UK Green Building Council, has said that the decision to make Liberal Democrat MP Chris Hune the energy and climate change secretary is good news for sustainability issues.
