Liverpool police get handle on home security

Police in Liverpool have been checking if doors are locked on a number of propertiesPolice in Liverpool have been using a very simple method to improve home security in the city.A very straightforward tactic has been used by police in Liverpool to improve home security in the city, it has been revealed.

Merseyside Police has revealed that its Operation Handle initiative has seen officers asked to walk down streets in burglary hotspots and simply try door handles to ensure they are locked.

In the past week, 66 of the 3,500 UPVC doors checked were found to be open and officers woke residents to inform them of the potential dangers.

The operation also revealed 14 cases of open windows, where burglars would be able to climb through.

Chief inspector Shaun Holland said: "We will continue this operation until we are satisfied that every resident has got the message to keep their windows and doors locked."

Elderly residents were recently given advice on home security issues from local police officers, according to the Saffron Walden Reporter.
