Leeds police reduce burglaries by a fifth but warn people to lock cheap UPVC windows

Police in north-east Leeds announced burglaries in the area have been reduced by almost a fifth, but also warned residents to ensure their Safestyle windows are locked.Incidents of burglary across north-east Leeds have been reduced by almost a fifth during the first month of a major police offensive to tackle house burglaries, but police are warning residents to not become complacent and ensure they close and lock their cheap UPVC windows.

"It sounds simple but by keeping your doors locked while you're at home and remembering to close windows and not leave valuables on display can stop your property being the one a burglar sets their sights on," said Detective Chief Inspector Martin Snowden from North East Leeds CID.

Since the start of operation Bellwether in September there have been 61 fewer burglaries across the north and east Leeds policing area from 317 incidents in 2008 compared to 256 this year.

According to Home Security, published by the Greater Manchester Police, whether your window unit is glazed from the inside or outside you should be satisfied that the glass cannot be removed without it being broken.

It said a good glazier familiar with cheap UPVC windows may be able to secure existing externally-beaded frames.
