Lack of planning permission 'could harm property's price'

Not seeking planning permission for extensions could affect the price of a propertyRecent events in Birmingham have suggested that people who extend their homes without planning permission could struggle to sell the properties.People who fail to gain planning permission for home extensions and conservatories could struggle to sell their properties, it has been suggested.

Birmingham City Council's planning chairman, councillor Peter Douglas Osborn, made the comment as the local authority investigates the creation of several extensions in the area without full permission.

According to the Birmingham Post, an inquiry into unauthorised development at the buildings in Yardley found that authorities can not have them pulled down.

However, councillor Osborn told the newspaper: "We have to give a proportionate response which means that if an extension is a couple of feet over, we cannot tell them to pull the whole thing down.

"But the Land Registry is aware that there is unauthorised development and this will affect their ability to sell and prevent a buyer getting a mortgage."

Kate Gordon, planning team member for the Campaign to Protect Rural England, recently claimed controls should be placed on the extension of properties in the countryside.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19178453-ADNFCR
