Speaking at a Home4Media event, managing director of Garden Trading, Jon Holloway, said that slate and grey shades have evolved from older trends of cream accessories and walls.

He added that palettes range from deep slate to softened putty colours and attractively complement a range of other hues.

Mr Holloway said: "Black is very harsh and slate just goes really well in a farmhouse kitchen, it looks great in a contemporary kitchen and it's a smart sophisticated look."

Linda Carson Pearson, an interiors commentator writing for Helium, said this week that people looking for farmhouse kitchen quotes should use wood as a way to introduce a warm, rustic atmosphere in the room.
