Ronnie Whelan, editor of Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, said that kitchen design has come a "long, long way" and now reflects the multiple functions that the room has.

Ms Whelan explained: "With a trend for more open-plan living, it is the hub of the home where all the family can congregate ... and makes it worth spending the money on, as well as adding value to your property."

She added that high-gloss finishes continue to be popular, as well as mixing and matching materials and colours.

Last week, LV= released the Modern Kitchens report which showed that a kitchen is now the most expensive room in the home.

According to the survey, homeowners now spend around £4,000 when seeking kitchen quotes, which is almost £500 more than the typical living room.
