Janet Eavenson, owner of Leonard Provence Interiors, said that grey is an ideal base colour for a room, as it works well with all colours.

She explains: "Something that is just getting stronger and stronger is grey. It continues to be a really hot topic. Not just in accessories but [...] actually for rooms in general."

If people are unsure about using grey to colour their space, Ms Eavenson suggested that homeowners could inject the shade into their designs by using grey accessories, such as soft furnishings, tables and picture frames.

Earlier this month, Clare Nolan told Daily Mail readers that kitchen quotes could be given a mellow, autumn touch by using stoneware in natural shades of grey, carved wooden bowls and vintage glass as accents in the room.
