Islands boost kitchen design and practicality, expert advises As well as being practical, kitchen islands can also help make a cooking area look better, it has been claimed.Kitchen islands are fast becoming the most popular focal points for contemporary kitchens, homeowners have been advised.

While in the past, kitchen islands have merely been viewed in practical terms, for example just being used as an additional place to sit, now they are coming into their own in terms of aesthetics and defining what many view as the most important room of the home, Philly.com has reported.

One expert, William Bygone, president and owner of Chicago-based Bygone Construction Company, explained that, when used effectively, a kitchen island can act as a strategic design element in a chic and contemporary open-plan home.

"In an open kitchen that leads into a living room or dining room, islands can be a nice way to break up the space and add extra seating and storage," he told the website.

He added that, homeowners should always try to distribute chairs even around a kitchen island so as to better facilitate conversation.

This comes soon after Verdict Research analyst Matthew Pinner tipped bathroom flooring projects to be the big DIY trend of 2010.
