Insurer predicts 50% home burglary increase

Burglary increase predictedNorwich Union has predicted there could be a 50 per cent increase in household burglaries in 2009.There could be a 50 per cent increase in the amount of household burglaries by the end of 2009, according to a leading insurance company.

Norwich Union estimated that up to £421 million of belongings could be stolen before the end of the year, which could result in people looking for a quote for security improvements to their homes.

The insurer estimates that 75 per cent of burglaries also involve damage to the property, with criminals "jemmying open" doors and windows with crow bars and using brute force to enter properties.

Simon Warsop, director of home pricing at Norwich Union, said: "History shows that when unemployment rises we also see an increase in crime and unfortunately the latest Home Office figures obviously show an upward trend in domestic burglary."

Crime figures from the Home Office showed the number of domestic burglaries increased by four per cent between October and December 2008.
