Installing your own double glazing can create "a lot of damage"

DIY lovers are advised to call the professionals when it comes to bigger jobs such as new windows.People keen on DIY should steer clear of complicated jobs such as installing new windows.The interest in DIY is increasing but doing complicated home improvements yourself, such as installing UPVC windows, can cause "a lot of damage" according to Duncan Hayes, temporary editor at Build It.

Mr Hayes advised home improvers to "know your limitations" as attempting to make changes that really require a professional can lead to "an awful lot of mess".

His comments follow research by B&Q, which found that under-35s feel less confident about undertaking basic home improvement tasks than those aged 50 and over.

The research indicates that 18 to 35 year-olds blame a lack of knowledge (51 per cent), motivation (29 per cent) and fear of getting it wrong (17 per cent) for their hesitancy to perform DIY.

In the report, 45 per cent of 18 to 35 year-olds were found to have struggled to put up a shelf and have often needed help with DIY, with only 59 per cent of under-35s being able to re-wire a plug.
