Making a home more energy efficient, though installing cheap double glazing, for example, is a big but necessary project, the National Home Improvement Council has suggested.Installing energy efficient features, such as cheap double glazing, is a "big project" but is necessary if the UK is to meet its carbon targets, according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, said that there are many things homeowners should consider when they begin trying to reduce their carbon footprints."Energy efficiency means covering everything from loft insulation to cavity wall insulation and new boilers and generally upgrading windows and doors," said Mr Leech."It really is a big project," he added. His comments follow the release of The English Housing Survey by Communities and Local Government, which showed that home energy efficiency has increased in recent years, with the average standard assessment procedure (SAP) rating increasing from 42 in 1996 to 51 in 2008.Mr Leech went on to say, however, that cheap double glazing and other energy efficiency home improvements need to be made to around 50,000 properties a year if the UK is going to hit the government's carbon targets for 2050.Posted by Lucy Pritchard
