James Strawbridge, an eco campaigner and TV presenter, said that people should consider which room they spend the most time in and look into installing cheap double glazing in that area, as this is a good way to start saving money on energy bills.

Mr Strawbridge recommended that people also buy a good set of curtains to hang in front of windows to further insulate them

"Nobody likes throwing money away, so it's a matter of trying to cut down on waste, which is the wasted heat," he said.

Mr Strawbridge said that 17 per cent of people in country still have single glazed windows and are therefore allowing lots of energy to escape from their homes.

The British Fenestration Rating Council has said that installing energy-efficient cheap double glazing can reduce carbon emissions by almost a fifth and save as much as £470 a year on energy bills.
