Those improving their homes should install cheap double glazing at the same timeThose improving their homes could install cheap double glazing at the same time, the National Home Improvement Council has said.Homeowners improving their property should attempt to increase its energy efficiency at the same time, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has said, perhaps by installing cheap double glazing.

Recent research by Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects revealed that three quarters of people want to carry out home improvements, but just 12 per cent of these are motivated by the desire to increase their energy efficiency.

Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, said that, when installing new bathrooms or kitchens, people should consider including environmentally-friendly fittings and features.

"You can get baths now which will give you a very good bathing experience, but don't use as much water and that is the sort of thing that people should be considering," he added.

He went on to say that he was surprised that so few people's home improvement projects were motivated by saving energy.
