The website went on to outline a number of ways in which homeowners can make their properties more energy efficient.

"Seal all those air leaks with sealant or caulking and weather stripping," recommended the news provider.

"Start with attic insulation, followed by exterior and basement walls, floors, and crawl spaces. Insulate and seal attic air ducts."

The publication went on to say that opening curtains on west and south facing windows during the day will allow sunlight to heat a property naturally.
