Houses without cheap double glazing 'sell for less'

Houses without double glazed windows sell for lessMost Brits would haggle for a lower price if a house they were interested in did not have energy-saving features such as cheap double glazing, recent research has suggested.

Over half of Brits would seek a lower asking price if a property they were thinking of buying did not have energy saving features, which could include cheap double glazing, a study has suggested.

Research by County Homesearch, a UK-based independent network of home finders, found that 57 per cent of people would attempt to bargain down the price of a property if it had low energy efficiency.

The study also revealed that 74 per cent of people are more interested in the amount of money that energy efficient features, such as cheap double glazing, can save them than the benefits that these have to the environment.

Jonathan Haward, chairman of County Homesearch, said: "The survey results are not surprising news. Homebuyers were primarily concerned that energy efficiency saved them money, not the planet."

The government recently launched a new strategy called Warm Homes, Greener Homes, which aims to cut 29 per cent of emissions from UK homes by 2020.

Earlier this week, Dr Neil Bentley, director of business environment at the Confederation of British Industry, said this will not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions but save consumers money.
