Homes buyers should be told energy costs, says Energy Trust

Energy efficienct housing graphicPeople buying a property in the UK should be allowed to know how much a home costs to heat up front, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

A report by consumer magazine Which? said the energy saving body believes forcing sellers to disclose up front how energy efficient their home is would result in more people investing in green fixtures and fittings such as double glazing and solar panels.

A more transparent and clear report would also be likely to encourage buyers to seek out the most energy efficient properties in the area.

Fraser Winterbottom, the Trust’s chief operating officer, said it was similar to a car manufacturer providing details of how fuel efficient a vehicle is and how many miles to the gallon it will manage.

Homes being built, sold or rented in the UK now need an energy performance certificate by law which rates a property’s level of energy efficiency on a scale of A to G. The Trust says hard figures would provide a better means of comparison.
