Homeowners warned over subsidence

Subsidence could impact on home improvement work, it has been suggestedProperty owners could benefit from getting their homes checked for subsidence before planning home improvements.A leading insurer has issued a warning to homeowners over the dangers of subsidence.

In comments which suggest property owners should check for such problems before planning home improvement work, esure has stated that cover claims related to subsidence are expected to peak this year.

The firm also suggested that the failure to get structural surveys could also undo the good work of having a conservatory installed by impacting on the saleability of a home.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting for esure, said: "By picking up problems early, the worst damage can often be avoided and enable vendors to maintain a higher value for their property.

"The rule for anyone in a clay soil area this summer is keep your eyes open for any cracks that appear or change for the next 18 months."

A recent poll by Ratedpeople.com found that Brits pay a total of £350 million a year to correct mistakes made during home improvement work.
