Homeowners 'warned of DIY home security'

DIY home securityDirect Line has urged property owners to fit their homes with proper security equipment rather than using homemade measures.Householders in the UK should ensure their property is fitted with proper home security equipment rather than illegal DIY measures, according to Direct Line.

A study by the firm found that five per cent of householders have set up homemade traps for burglars, including booby traps or snares, despite the practise being a criminal offence.

The insurer has reiterated the importance of fitting proper locks, alarms and reinforced windows to ensure they have the "maximum amount of home security that you can" – which could lead to people searching for quotes on new windows and doors to beat the burglars.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said would "not recommend" any homemade traps, stating: "Carrying out simple security measures, such as keeping doors and windows locked, can help ensure householders and their possessions are kept safe."

Recent figure released from the Home Office showed there was a four per cent increase in burglaries in the final quarter of 2008.
