Just under a third of people have put off doing repairs in their homes over the past 18 months, business journalist Tricia Phillips wrote in a piece for the Daily Mirror.

Martyn Foulds, of Halifax Home Insurance, told Ms Phillips that people are carrying out smaller jobs themselves and putting off bigger jobs with the idea of saving cash.

But he warned that this could cost more in the long-run: "Looking after cosmetic things and finishing touches, rather than structural problems, is fruitless and could end up costing an awful lot of money."

One investment that will pay for itself over the years is installing cheap double glazing.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, cheap double glazing can cut energy bills by around £135 a year as it reduces heat loss by 50 per cent compared to single glazed windows.
