Homeowners should "check security of patio doors"

Make sure your doors are locked, warns MORE TH>NThe changing of the clocks means potential burglars have an extended cover of darkness in which to commit break-ins, so make sure your patio doors are locked, an insurance company has warned. It is now officially British wintertime and MORE TH>N is advising homeowners that now is a good opportunity to check the security of their properties, by ensuring their cheap UPVC windows are locked, for example.

Some 744,000 household burglaries take place annually - and those with less than basic home security measures are more likely to become victims, according to the insurer.

The shortened days give potential burglars an extended cover of darkness in which to commit break-ins, so it is important to make sure that preventative measures are in place to ward off such predators.

Burglaries where vehicles are also stolen now feature in seven per cent of home burglaries - so MORE TH>N is advising homeowners take extra care not to keep their vehicle keys prominently displayed near cheap UPVC windows or patio doors.

The company advised that, if replacing the locks on your front and back doors, including patio doors, choose those that conform to British Standard 3621 or with a minimum of five levers - the better the lock the harder it will be for an intruder to make their way in.

According to the Home Office, households with no security measures in place are ten times more likely to be burgled than those with such simple security measures as window locks and deadlocks.
