Homeowners reminded to stay safe over Easter holiday

DIY accidentAnyone considering trying their hand at some home improvement jobs this Easter has been warned to take special care.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), every year more than 200,000 people in the UK have to go to A&E after injuring themselves in a DIY, maintenance or gardening accident at home.

Non-powered hand tools appear to be a major problem for homeowners. In 2009/10, more than 4,300 people were admitted to hospital after injuring themselves with one.

Most people are not capable of completing skilled jobs such as fitting new windows and so it is far better to get double glazing quotes from specialist double glazing companies.

Sheila Merrill, RoSPA’s public safety adviser, said: "Over-ambition and lack of knowledge are among the main causes of DIY accidents, and we advise people to be honest about their abilities.

"Accidents happen more easily when you are unprepared and in a rush, so think through the tasks you intend to do before you start work."
