Homeowners 'making most of their properties'

DIY 'becoming more popular'. Property owners are doing all they can to keep their homes well maintained, it is said.Brits are capitalising on the recession by investing time and money into their homes, one industry expert says.

People realise they have to maintain their homes and are taking responsibility into their own hands and turning to DIY, explains Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council.

Fitting new bathrooms or kitchens are among the most popular revamps as they add value, he continues.

Maintaining the outside of the property is also important, with new double glazing one of the best ways to improve the look of a house, Mr Leech adds.

Even simple updates such as giving windows and doors a fresh coat of paint can have an impact, especially if the property is on the market, the expert explains.

Figures from the Halifax Home Improvement Survey suggest that eco-friendly improvements can also aid the saleability of property, adding more than £4,000 to market value.
