Homeowners make improvements to 'please themselves', not buyers

Homeowners are making improvements to 'please themselves', not potential buyersHome improvements, such as new fitted kitchens, are being made to satisfy the current owner of the property, not potential purchasers.Homeowners are becoming more interested in "personalising" their homes, making improvements such as adding new fitted kitchens for their own pleasure, not to increase the property's appeal to potential buyers, according to House Beautiful magazine.

Julia Goodwin, editor at House Beautiful magazine, said that there is still a market for more expensive home improvements such as new kitchens or new UPVc windows as people are deciding to stay in their homes for longer.

"Last year was all about people tightening their belts and not spending anything, but towards the end of this year - and hopefully it will go through into next year - people are starting to take on the slightly bigger projects," she added.

Ms Goodwin said that energy efficiency is "enormous" and that, in the future, she hopes all of the awards given by the magazine will take the eco-credentials of the winners into consideration.

This year the magazine's gold award went to the Mira Eco Handset, an economical showerhead that provides the feeling of a "lovely shower", but uses a fraction of the water used by a conventional showerhead.
