Research by AA has found that 24 per cent of homeowners are planning to increase the size of their property by an extra room, which will create opportunities for building firms across the UK.

Six million respondents admitted to be planning home improvements to their property over the next 12 months, as consumers have decided against selling their houses due to the recession.

Some 57 per cent said they want to create a nicer living environment, while 32 per cent are renovating to add value.

Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans, said: "Building an extension may involve a significant outlay to start with however, in the short term owners will be making their property more comfortable for themselves and in the long term they are adding value; in this way, such renovations effectively kill two birds with one stone."
