George Clarke, presenter of Build a New Life and Channel 4's The Home Show, said that, in the current climate, people are not looking to upgrade their homes to compete with friends, they just want a "lovely home" that works for them and their family.

He said that the only good thing to come out of the credit crunch is that it has made people stop wanting to climb the property ladder.

A survey conducted by the National Home Improvement Show found that 91.3 per cent of respondents were looking to improve their homes, by installing double glazing for example, in the next 12 months.

"Rather than people going off and doing their grand designs and moving to big houses, people are wanting to stay where they are and consolidate what they've got and add value to what they've got," Mr Clark said, adding: "It's all about improving."
