Homeowners 'enthusiastic about energy efficiency'

Property owners positive about energy efficiencyA new study shows property owners in the UK are positive about the need to improve the eco-friendliness of their homes.Homeowners in the UK are willing to play their part in tackling climate change, a new study has shown.

Research conducted by Ipsos MORI has found that property owners in the UK are enthusiastic about the government's plans for a Great British Refurb, under which energy efficiency and "whole-house eco-makeovers" are to be promoted.

The study did find that homeowners would need help through loans and grants to cover the costs of decarbonising their properties.

Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary, said people are "enthusiastic and positive about the need for better energy efficiency in our homes".

He added: "The government wants to make these changes as simple and affordable as possible for householders - and we want people to have a say in the process.

"That's why we've been holding householder consultations with ordinary citizens coming together to discuss the challenges we face, look at examples of energy efficiency and micro-generation in nearby homes in their neighbourhood, and come up with ideas and suggestions for government to follow."

Dr Richard Dixon, director of WWF Scotland, recently told the Scotsman that people who do not improve the energy efficiency of their homes should face criminal action.
