Home security 'can be simple and effective'

Keeping a home secure does not have to be difficult, it has been claimedEnsuring your property is safe does not have to be expensive, according to an expert.A crime reduction officer has claimed that homeowners do not need expensive equipment to improve their home security.

Tony Alderman, who is based in Taunton, made the comment at the launch of Avon and Somerset Constabulary's new guide for local residents who want to protect their belongings in the summer months.

He claimed "simple but effective" measures can make a major difference to the security of a home.

"Clever planting, padlocks on gates and sheds and motion sensor lights are inexpensive and effective," he explained.

"Garden tools are often used to assist the burglar breaking into a property - ladders, are particularly helpful to thieves for example, so keep them locked away."

Last week, Neighbourhood Watch Week was held in the UK to highlight ways that communities and homeowners can better protect themselves from criminals.
