Home security attitudes shifting

New safety study highlights consumer fearsA new study has found that people are still concerned about their safety and could look into home improvements to make their property more secure.People's perceptions of safety could trigger their home improvement choices, a new study shows.

Research by Halifax Home Insurance has found that people's perceptions of safe places to live have changed, which could see an increase in homeowners looking for quotes for the installation of home security equipment.

The study found that 47 per cent of people living in cities thought urban areas were safer than their rural counterparts – going against the traditional view of the countryside being a safer place to live.

Some 37 per cent of people living in cities admitted to thinking about moving due to crime in their area, compared to eight per cent of those living in villages.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, advised homeowners to fit secure and robust locks on all doors and windows.

He added: "Depending on one's home surroundings, the perceptions of what is safer in regards to city versus country living differ considerably. Yet, wherever the surroundings, people need to be aware of the steps they can take to protect themselves in and about their home."

Thames Valley Police recently urged people living in Abingdon to improve their home security after five houses were targeted for burglaries in just one night, the Oxford Times reported.
