Melanie Griffiths, assistant editor of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, has claimed those seeking double glazing and conservatory quotes should be more aware of how work can affect the character of a building.

She claimed too many alterations that have failed to preserve the original styling of homes have been "thoughtlessly made".

"While planning policy is supposed to restrict bad development in conservation areas, this hasn't always been possible," she added.

"Every homeowner should pay just as much due care and attention to their property's maintenance and overall appearance."

Recent figures from Unbiased.co.uk revealed that 25 per cent of Brits are planning to make improvements to their property.
