David Grievson, managing director of Puddlestone, a property development business, said that the trend for this home improvement project is indicative of the state of the economy, with many having a lack of disposable income.

"It is vital to check with your council that a structure in your garden is allowable (only some garden structures will fall under permitted development) otherwise, as in the case of Boris Johnson, you may be ordered to take it down," he said of the projects.

Mr Grievson went on to say that he does not believe that installing a garden office, possibly complemented by cheap double glazing, would add value to a property, however, he added that it might help the house sell more quickly.

Voting is currently underway for the Shed of the Year, with home improvement enthusiasts in the hunt for a £1,000 prize as well as Cuprinol Sprayable products for winning.
