Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor at Build It magazine, suggested that people should do whatever work they can themselves and stick to small tasks in order to save money.

She also said that even if homeowners are planning on hiring a professional, they should read up about DIY in order to protect their interests from unscrupulous tradesmen.

Ms DeSouza explained: "When a tradesman comes to visit, and you reel off what the job is, what it entails and how long you think they should take to do it, they will be far less likely to take you for a ride."

Recent research by Comcero.com revealed that 2.2 million men are so DIY illiterate that they would struggle to complete simple tasks such as changing a light bulb, while a further 3.6 million are not able to rewire a plug.
