Home improvement is 'good for your health'

DIY can burn as many calories as attending the gym Homeowners can get into shape while carrying out DIY tasks around the house. Doing DIY to improve the kitchen or bathroom could also be good for your overall health, according to one expert.

Joe Provey, the director of Home and Garden Editorial Services, writing for DIY Life, explained that he recently embarked on a home improvement DIY quest and found that he was burning a large amount of calories.

After spending some months patching walls, sanding floors and painting, Mr Provey realised that he had in fact lost the 5lbs he had spent for a year trying to lose, and proved to himself that spending some time installing cheap double glazing can actually be good for health.

"The amount of calories you can burn doing the following home improvements (carrying lumber, cleaning gutters and sanding floors) is comparable to what you burn after an hour of Pilates (238), on a stationary bike (476), or playing soccer (more than 500 calories per hour)," he said.

A study conducted by Halifax, recently found that bathrooms and kitchens are at the top of many people's home improvement priorities.
