Gill Richardson, talking to the Guardian, said that homeowners should try to hide their radiators by painting them the same colour as the wall, making them "unobtrusive".

Ms Richardson also advised that keeping the same flooring style throughout a space can also make an area seem larger.

"The best way to enlarge a small space is to decide what activity will go on in the room and allocate separate space for it. Built-in furniture takes up less room because it's made to fit," advised the expert.

Furthermore, in the kitchen, tones of the same colour should be used to make some things stand out, while others will disappear.

The MoneySavingBlog.com also recently advised that carrying out home improvements can help save people money over time while also learning a new skill.
