Home improvement 'can lead to back damage'

Back pain from DIYAn expert has warned Brits of the damage they could do to their back as a result of attempting home improvement.Homeowners across the UK could be doing severe damage to their backs by attempting some DIY work, according to one expert.

Barrie Savory, pain expert and author of The Good Back Guide, claims that 43 per cent of Brits are unable to afford home improvements and will instead undertake the jobs themselves.

He added that four of the top five triggers for back pain are things likely to be undertaken by Brits during any weekend, including lifting and carrying, DIY and sleeping.

The expert has advised would-be DIYers to do some warm-up exercises and stretches to prepare the body for the rigours of the work.

Hampshire Trading Standards recently warned that the growing number of people doing their own home improvements could lead to more DIY accidents.

Ken Thornber, Hampshire County Council leader, told the Portsmouth News: "The summer months are increasingly a time for DIY and, during the recession, there may be the temptation to do a job yourself to save some money, but it's vital to be careful when using tools."
