Home improvement: Advice given on painting plaster skimCeramic tiles should be considered instead of plaster skim.People carrying out home improvement projects in their bathroom need to decide whether they want to paint their walls or apply ceramic tiles.

Jeff Howell, writing for the Daily Telegraph, was responding to a reader who complained of peeling paint 18 months after applying it to plaster skim.

The expert added that there are several reasons why paint can fail to adhere to plastered surfaces, with skimming occasionally causing problems through cracking.

Depending on where in the UK a property is located, this can also lead to problems, with some solid brick wall houses being originally finished internally with lime-based plaster.

Mr Howell stated that skim, made from the modern pink gypsum plaster, is not suitable for damp conditions, and said that people should consider using ceramic tiles to decorate their bathroom.

Recently, Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Build It magazine, recently said that people should "keep things natural" when decorating, using clean lines in the bathroom to keep things stylish.
