Homeowners are beginning to invest in larger home improvement projects, which could boost the economy, according to an industry expert. The UK construction sector is 'feeling quite healthy' as growing numbers of homeowners give up on small-scale improvement tasks and invest in larger projects, it has been suggested. Despite reporting an 11 per cent fall in pre-tax profits for 2009, Travis Perkins chief executive Geoff Cooper has noted that things are looking up for contractors across the country. Mr Cooper explained that contractors and sub-contractors, as well as plumbers, are now feeling more confident in the more immediate future, with this optimism expected to spread to homeowners and other consumers over the coming months, possibly encouraging them to undertake home improvement projects such as fitting double glazing or even a conservatory. "Our markets appear to have stabilised following a sharp decline at the start of the recession," Mr Cooper said. "However, much uncertainty remains about the condition of the UK economy and the prospects for construction markets."Earlier this month, a cheap double glazing firm in Worcestershire announced it is to take on the staff it had to make redundant only a matter of months ago as the economy continues to pick up.
