Historic Australian hotel saves energy by fitting double glazing

Double glazing is helping a historic hotel to save energy and moneyA historic hotel in Australia has been fitted with cheap double glazing and insulation, which have both improved its energy-efficiency.Many believe that heritage organisations get in the way of improving the eco-friendly credentials of historic buildings, but a hotel in Australia has proved that this is not always the case.

Owners of the Alto Hotel in Melbourne have fitted cheap double glazing and insulation in the building to reduce heat loss and, therefore, energy bills, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The double glazing windows use thicker, 10 mm panes of glass and the hotel also has new, staggered stud walls that sandwich air between.

A green rating has not yet been achieved by the hotel, but Alto general manager Gary Stickland told the newspaper that it has achieved the related the National Australian Built Environment Rating System credentials.

The hotel is in the Unity Hall heritage building, which was built for the Australian Railways Union on the site of the 1860s Railway Hotel.

Last month, greenbang.com reported that the owner of a 330-year-old farmhouse in Northumberland is struggling to find ways of improving the energy efficiency of his home as English Heritage will not allow him to install cheap double glazing, or more expensive versions.
