Higher council tax for inefficient homes?

New scheme could encourage green home improvements The UK Green Buildings Council has proposed a controversial new scheme which could see people paying more council tax if they do not make their home more energy efficient.Higher council tax and stamp duty for inefficient properties could provide Brits with the incentive they need to make some green home improvements, it has been claimed.

Government advisors have recommended that homes which do not feature measures such as double glazing and insulation should have to face higher costs, reports the Daily Mail.

These punishments, suggested by John Adams of the UK Green Buildings Council, would be brought in alongside the proposed green mortgages scheme, which would see people being able to apply for loans to spend on energy-efficient home improvements.

The cash could be spent on a number of measures, such as solar panels, new boilers and cavity wall insulation.

Climate secretary Ed Miliband is expected to welcome the green loan scheme, however, a decision on the penalties is not anticipated until the autumn.

Recent research from Halifax highlighted that green home improvements which offer fuel efficiency and help save energy are thought to be the best way to add value to a property.
