'Green gas' developed

A 'green gas' has been developed A biogas made through a process similar to composting is being generated by Ecotricity, the world's first green electricity company.People considering investing in energy-efficient home improvements such as double glazing may be interested to hear that a "green gas" is shortly to be made available to UK homes.

Ecotricity, the world's first green electricity company is creating supplies of biogas through a process similar to composting that breaks down food waste and other material that would normally get dumped into landfill sites or burnt in incinerators.

According to Ecotricity, green gas made this way has the potential to generate as much as half of the UK's domestic gas.

Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, said: "We're kick-starting the market to move Britain from brown to green gas, turning people's gas bills into green gas mills, just as we've been doing with windmills for over a decade."

The company has pledged that it will deliver its green gas at no extra cost, matching British Gas on both its standard gas and dual-fuel prices.

Next month a United Nations conference is being held in Copenhagen to devise a new international agreement to tackle climate change, which could include increasing household grants for fitting double glazing.
