Governments meeting in Copenhagen soon to discuss climate change should listen to recent evidence rather than relying on the 2007 Assessment Report, according to top scientific organisations. There are various steps that households can take to reduce their carbon footprint, such as installing double glazing, but governments should be doing more to put a stop to climate change and should listen to recent evidence on the subject, according to three scientific organisations.A statement from the Met Office, Natural Environment Research Council and the Royal Society said that governments across the globe need to consider recent scientific evidence showing that climate change is dangerous, long-term and potentially irreversible. The three scientific organisations said that recent evidence is considerably stronger than that in the last Assessment Report, published in 2007, which is soon to be considered in Copenhagen when crucial decisions will be made by governments about limiting and reducing the impacts of climate change, now and in the future.Recent evidence shows that global carbon dioxide concentrations are continuing to rise, and methane concentrations have started to increase again after a decade of near stability.According to the energy saving trust, homeowners can make a great difference to climate change through simple steps such as switching off lights when they leave rooms, or installing double glazing.Written by Helen Sykes.
