Government urges schools to save energy

Installing double glazing can help to reduce energy useThe government is urging schools in England to save energySchools in England that have old windows may have to consider installing double glazing as the government is urging them to save energy.

Secretary of state for children, schools and families Ed Balls has encouraged headteachers to install smart meters in order to more accurately monitor energy use.

According to the government, using these digital meters and reducing electricity use could see fuel bills cut by up to £700 a year by primary schools and over £3,000 by secondary schools, the Press Association reported.

His comments come ahead of a meeting of the representatives of more than 180 countries in Copenhagen to seek a new international agreement to tackle climate change.

According to government website Act on CO2, almost half (42 per cent) of UK carbon emissions come from the things individuals do on a daily basis, such as driving a car or turning the heating up.

Individuals can help to reduce energy emissions through making certain improvements to their homes, such as installing double glazing or insulation.
