Government selects eco-town sites

Gordon Brown said the idea behind the eco-towns was The government has announced its selection of the sites where new energy efficient eco-towns are to be built.Brand new energy-efficient housing is to be built in Cornwall, Norfolk, Hampshire and Oxfordshire, under new government plans.

As part of their drive to cut carbon emissions, ministers have revealed that St Austell, Rackheath, Whitehill-Bordon and North West Bicester will become eco-towns.

Double glazing and a range of other energy saving measures, including smart meters and microgeneration technology, will be featured in the new properties – which will all be within ten minutes' walk of public transport and everyday neighbourhood services.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said the concept of eco-towns was "revolutionary".

He added: "They will provide modern homes with lower energy bills, energy-efficient offices and brand new schools, community centres and services."

The government also recently announced plans to launch a new grant scheme which will allow homeowners across the UK to install the likes of double glazing and insulation in their properties.
