Government 'must improve energy saving measures'

The government should do more to improve the efficiency of homes, it has been claimedThe government has been urged to provide more support to homeowners that are struggling to introduce energy saving measures in their properties.More effort should be made to support homeowners who cannot afford to improve the energy efficiency of their properties, it has been claimed.

Grant Shapps, the shadow housing minister, made the comment after it was revealed new proposals could see council tax and stamp duty increased on homes that are not fitted with energy saving measures such as UPVC windows and doors.

Talking to the Daily Telegraph, he claimed "genuine innovation" was necessary to improve the green credentials of homes across the UK.

"Rather than penalising families who happen to live in homes which are harder to insulate they should introduce genuine help for people to reduce the carbon footprint of their property," he added.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, recently claimed that "grand gestures" are needed to encourage people to improve their property's efficiency.
