Government funds research into energy saving features

Energy saving light bulbs, lilke double glazing, can reduce CO2 emissionsThe government has provided £1.2 million for research into energy-efficient lighting, which, like double glazing, could reduce the UK's carbon footprint.Double glazing has been reducing household bills and the UK's carbon footprint for years, but a new government initiative is encouraging research into energy-efficient lighting.

Some £1.2 million has been donated by the Technology Strategy Board and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) towards the research and development of more eco-friendly lighting systems.

Businesses will first compete for funding to carry out research for three months and the most promising technologies will then receive further funding to develop and evaluate prototypes or demonstration units.

Environment minister Dan Norris said: "Moving towards a more sustainable, low carbon and resource efficient future is vital for our environment, but also offers great opportunities for economic growth and job creation."

The Energy Saving Trust recommends that homeowners and businesses use energy-saving light bulbs, as these use up to 80 per cent less electricity than a standard bulb.

It also recommends the installation of double glazing, as this cuts heat loss through windows by half.
