Google launches energy measuring tool

Google has launched an energy measuring toolA tool that allows consumer to see detailed home energy information on their computer has been launched by Google.Energy-conscious homeowners can now see how much energy their double glazing is saving them through a new service launched by Google.

The free Google PowerMeter receives information from utility smart meters and in-home energy management devices and displays this information on a personalised Google homepage.

According to Google, studies show that being able to see how much electricity is being used in near real time, throughout the day, makes it easier to reduce energy use and cut bills.

This feedback requires either an advanced electricity meter, a smart meter, or a consumer-owned electricity management device.

Earlier this year the government confirmed plans to roll out smart meters to all homes across UK by 2020.

The Energy Saving Trust said it believes smart meters will be "essential in ensuring the potential energy saving benefits to consumers materialise".

However, many of today's smart meters do not have easy-to-read digital displays so the Google tool will help the consumer to understand their energy usage.
