All three political parties have laid out in their manifestos the ways in which they would reduce the UK's energy usage and improve its carbon footprint.

FoE welcomes the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives' proposals for making the existing feed-in tariff scheme, which rewards homeowners and businesses for producing their own energy, more ambitious.

It also claims that Labour deserves credit for introducing the feed-in tariff in the first place.

Andy Atkins, executive director at FoE, said that people should be "encouraged to play their part in tackling climate change - ensuring that they share in the financial benefits of a greener future is a great way to do this."

For those looking to reduce their efficiency wastage than generate their own power, cheap double glazing is a good option.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, such windows can save a household as much as £135 a year in energy bills.
