FMB welcomes Tories' double glazing grant proposal

FMB welcomes Tories' double glazing grant proposalThe Federation of Master Builders has welcomed proposals by the Tory party to provide up to £6,500 to households for energy-saving improvements such as double glazing. The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has welcomed a recent pledge from Conservative party leader David Cameron that, if elected, he would invest £20 million to make properties greener with home improvements such as double glazing.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB, said that homes contribute 27 per cent of the UK's total carbon emissions.

"If the UK is to have any hope of meeting its legal obligation to cut carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 then it is imperative that Britain's existing homes are made more energy efficient," he explained.

Mr Berry added that the Conservative's proposal to grant up to £6,500 per house hold to get energy efficient home improvements, such as double glazing or draft-proofed cheap patio doors, is a "welcome boost" but that, realistically, the figure should be more like £15,000.

Last week Which? said that homeowners should 'future proof' their homes with features such as double glazing to save money in the long-run and would pay for themselves within around six years.
