Solar panels have also been installed at Standground Fire Station in Peterborough and it is estimated that they will save the fire service around £900 per year through reducing gas use by 25 per cent, the Evening Telegraph reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, head of property Danny Rust said: "Switching to rooftop solar panels will not only save the service money, but will also reduce our carbon footprint while sending out a strong message to the community about our commitment to helping the environment."

According to the newspaper, nine Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service sites have also benefitted from new condensing boilers as well as double glazed windows. Fitting cheap UPVC windows is an effective way of helping the environment and reducing energy bills.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, double glazing can cut heat loss through windows by half, as well as saving the average household around £135 a year on heating bills.
