Figures highlight need for energy efficiency

New research has revealed energy bills could rise dramatically in next two yearsNew statistics predicting a rise in the cost of utility bills have highlighted the need for homeowners to boost the energy efficiency of their properties.The average annual energy bill in the UK could stand at almost £5,000 by 2020, new research has suggested.

uSwitch.com's forecast is based on pricing trends over the last five years and also takes into account the government's investment programme and the roll-out of smart meters into all homes.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at the website, claimed the statistics highlight how people should consider making their properties more efficient through the use of double glazing and other measures.

"My advice to consumers is to invest in making your home more energy efficient, reduce the amount of energy you use and make sure you are paying the lowest possible price for it," she explained.

"The savings you make through cutting the price of your energy could be re-invested into energy efficiency measures so that you reap even greater rewards in the future."

Housing minister John Healey recently unveiled a new consultation on improving the energy efficiency of homes.
